Eastrea: A tragedy. Annie Tyers took her own life (depression from the flu attack she had had previously). The funeral was at Coates Wesleyan Chapel and she was buried in Coates churchyard.

The Wesley Guild - A lecture about Tom Hood a poet, given by H.B. Hartley also a lecture in the Wesleyan Chapel on "Ultima Thule" by Rev. R. Philipson. Mr Dickens was the chairman and Miss Hart sang some solos.

Capsized. As Mr Cecil Whittome was travelling at a fair rate of speed upon his motor tricycle he met Mr. George Johnson near Beaumont’s corner. Mr Whittome in his anxiety to give plenty of room to the horse and cart turned too much to the left and lost control of his machine which ran violently down a steep place into the drain to some considerable distance into the field. He was, we are glad to say, unhurt. The machine was extricated and with the rider continued on its journey.

The new Rector Rev. A. Watts entertained his churchwardens, sidesmen Sunday school teachers and choir in the school room. A hot supper was partaken of at 6 o'clock and afterwards views illustrating the horrors of war were shown by Mr Russell of Peterborough.

Church Restoration report. Repairs at the very summit of the church spire have become necessary as the topmost stones have become dangerously displaced and immediate attention is required to avoid more costly damage to the church and a serious accident. The churchwardens are seeing to this matter. An appeal is being issued for funds to bring about the renewal of the roof on the North aisle. The sum of £85 is already in hand. Very successful Sunday School anniversary services were held on Sunday at the Wesleyan Chapel. On Tuesday a public meeting was held in the chapel at which the Rev. E. J. Gawne presided. Additional recitations were given and solos were sung by Misses Newell, Bedmore, Ashworth and Fletcher and by Mr Richardson. The collection amounted to £5.

There is a growing feeling among members of the church congregation that they sadly need new lamps for the church. The present lamps have now been in use for upwards of 25 years. They hope to raise the money by a bazaar and entertainment so that they may all have an opportunity of helping.

Restoration of the North aisle of the church: Very substantial progress is being made with the fund now being raised for the purpose of restoring the North aisle roof. It was not very difficult to raise £1000 for the nave and a similar sun for the chancel and great toil is not anticipated in obtaining the £300 for the present necessary work. Already the half-way mark has been reached and £115 15s 4d of the total paid and promised is in the bank and earning interest.

Drowning Fatality: William G Waters 18 months was found drowned at the Horseshoes in 18 inches of water. Verdict accidental death. The ditch was to be filled in as it was unnecessary PC French was the coroner's official.

Evening Continuation school. Mr Chaplin (Head) said it would meet on only 2 evenings per week. Sudden death of Matthew Brown at “Dirty Duck” Quaker’s Drove. He had had a heart trouble so there was no inquest. But his son found arsenic at the house. After more investigation the doctor was sure that a blood clot between the brain and the spine had been the cause of death. The coroner severely reprimanded the son.

The trustees of the Public Hall (Messrs Bowker, Weldon and J Searle) had decided to hand over management to a Coates Committee which was duly elected (A. J. Chaplin chairman). It was hoped there would be better support for the committee's work and that the hall could be hired at a more reasonable rather than hitherto.

A highly interesting and successful concert was held in the Public Hall. Scholars of the Coates Council School gave a major portion of the programme. It was repeated by request on Monday. The children were rewarded with milk and buns. £8 was raised.

Death has once more visited Coates under sad circumstances. Last week (I went back to look but no report was found) we chronicled the death of Mrs James Searle and this well we are called upon to record the death of Mrs James Blunt niece of the above who assisted in nursing her aunt. During the nursing Mrs. Blunt appears to have caught a sever cold. About 6am on Saturday she passed away. The neighbourhood is very sad. The funeral was on Wednesday.

The trustees of the Public Hall (Messrs Bowker, Weldon and J Searle) had decided to hand over management to a Coates Committee which was duly elected (A. J. Chaplin chairman). It was hoped there would be better support for the committee's work and that the hall could be hired at a more reasonable rather than hitherto.

A highly interesting and successful concert was held in the Public Hall. Scholars of the Coates Council School gave a major portion of the programme. It was repeated by request on Monday. The children were rewarded with milk and buns. £8 was raised.

Death has once more visited Coates under sad circumstances. Last week (I went back to look but no report was found) we chronicled the death of Mrs James Searle and this well we are called upon to record the death of Mrs James Blunt niece of the above who assisted in nursing her aunt. During the nursing Mrs. Blunt appears to have caught a sever cold. About 6am on Saturday she passed away. The neighbourhood is very sad. The funeral was on Wednesday.

Mr Laxton Bedford a well known farmer had the misfortune to lose a very valuable shire mare and foal last week but he was insured with the Yorkshire Insurance Company and sent a claim which was settles by cheque.

The death (Friday) of Mr Arthur Bowd, farmer. He was jumping a dyke when a broken reed punctured his wrist. Dr Brown was called in but tetanus (lockjaw) supervened. He was 62.
