Photographs: Then and Now
A selection of Coates images can be found on Blosslyn's Blog [1] Chapel [2] Church [3] Village sign
The photo below shows my Great Grandfather's Wheelwright's shop which was on South Green. In 2012 I was helped to find the location where this photograph was taken and I have indicated this on the pair of shots on the right. The vertical pale line and arrow indicate the link point and a building which is still standing.
A few years later I received an e-mail from someone had found this website. It suggested that the Coates scene is not of my family (in the background). I have no reason to doubt what I was told either by my father or by the person who emailed. All I can say is that I believe it is possible that my ancestors are shown.

This photo (left) is labelled East View (of the North Green looking towards the main road with the church on one's right) and the poor quality is because it is a photograph of a photocopied image in a pamphlet. The caption reads:
(L to R) The Charles Thorne Family, Maud (Setchfield) Broadbent, The Amos Family, The Charles Townsend Family (Florence Townsend married George French) The Albert Setchfield Family. The Butcher Shop was on the corner far right. North Green Coates.
Some time after I uploaded the image above, I came across the same photo (which is a postcard I think) on Facebook.

I have just located this image on my computer; which I obtained from this site. It is quite a small image so I enlarged it (Click on the right hand image and it will enlarge). The church can clearly be seen.
Then as luck would have it, a few days after I uploaded the above, I stumbled across the photo again on Facebook. However, the image below was not cropped by me; the young lad on the right is missing.
The first photograph was obtained from Facebook (apologies, I have forgotten the source) and is of 10, North Green, Coates in 1935, decorated for the coronation of King George VI. Some of the roof was cut off when the shot was taken, I assume.
The other 2 photographs were taken by me in December 2014. The right-hand door has been filled in and it is possible to see the brickwork where the door used to be.
