Coates, Cambridgeshire: A One-Place Study

About this site

Quite a lot of my ancestors lived (and are buried) in Coates and I have always felt an attraction to the place.  In my early teens I bicycled from Fletton, Peterborough (where I lived) to Coates in a day.  Family history research has revealed some facts about the village but Google has not provided me with much information.  I decided to rectify this situation in 2012 having discovered many other One Place Studies, although that site has changed since I first found it. My site is listed on www.oneplacestudy.org

My study of Coates began with the plan to trawl the census returns and see just what I could find out about the village in which my ancestors lived.  In particular I was be interested to see which people lived in Coates for the whole of their lives. A look at my census pages will reveal how far I have got with this aim.

I have also done a full survey of the churchyard and the results are to be found by clicking on the button below.

A note about accuracy of data on this site
The information on this website has been researched by me and is as accurate as I can make it within the constraints of the time I have available.  Obviously there is plenty of room for human error since transcribing census and other records is no small task.  You have been warned.

Much of the data is presented as images (gif and jpg files) and more recently as pdfs; this is because it is easier to upload tables to Weebly like this.  If you would like data in an editable format please contact me and I will see what I can do to help. A list of the software I used is here.

Banner
The photograph which acts as the banner at the top of each page shows the War memorial which is near the main road.  Full details of the names on the memorial can be found here.  Behind that is the Methodist Chapel which recently held its final service.
