On Sunday afternoon in a violent storm a portion of cement covering the tower fell with a crash. Some hit the nave and broke several slates. The noise startled the Junior Bible Club in church. The tower will have to be re-cemented all over. This is a worry for the Rector and churchwardens as it is a costly job and finances are at a low ebb.

The Strike - The neighbourhood is affected chiefly in the price of fuel - coal and turf - which is becoming dearer each day. Coal is selling retail at the following abnormal prices: Best, 1s. 10d, per cwt. and seconds, 1s. 9d. per cwt. whilst the local supply of turf has been exhausted and a further stock requisitioned at a dearer rate. Meat, especially beef and mutton are dearer. Oil, too has been raised in price. Farmers who want to thrash corn either for their animals or market are at a loss for coal with which to carry on their threshing operations.

An enjoyable social was held in the Parish Room in aid of the Tower Fund. Mr. E. G. Wickes was MC because the rector was ill. His illness also meant that at the vestry meeting on Tuesday only the presentation of accounts and the election of officers took place (all were re-elected)

The Sunday service had been taken by Mr. Vail, schoolmaster of Angle Bridge because the Rector was ill. On Easter Thursday an entertainment in aid of the Tower Fund took place in a crowded Public Hall. Four pounds was raised. Artistes gave their services willingly and some were paid for by generous sponsors.
The annual Pig Club supper took place on the Thursday before Easter. The report gives details of the food, the committee and many other people.

The work on the church spire had been delayed but was now underway. The Rector was still ill and confined to bed but his condition had improved over the last 10 days. Rev. A.E.T. Newman and Rev. J. T. Holmes had been taking services.

At 2.30 last Saturday a fire at J. Searle's stack yard at Oldermere was attended by Coates fire engine. The engine gear didn't work at first but the fire was eventually put out. £250 damage.

Owing to the urgent appeal from HQ a meeting of united political parties in Coates was held. It was unanimously agreed (resolved) that the task of canvassing for recruits be NOT undertaken. It was resolved to have meetings at Coates, The Turves and Angle Bridge.

The wedding of T. Canham of 1st Northamptonshire Regiment (who has been at home for 2 weeks with a wounded arm) to Miss Gertrude Ellen Shaw took place quietly at Holy Trinity Church.
Recruiting. It is hoped that after last week’s meeting the seeds were sown. As two married men have since gone (Fred Boon and George German) it is hoped that the example will be followed by single men who have the country's welfare at heart.
Relief Fund. Rector has put £70-£80 into the bank.

G. A. Beaton and H. and A. Johnson entertained a party of friends to a "Hare Drive" and the hares were sent to Whittlesey to be sold by auction. £9 was raised for the "Comforts for Wounded Soldiers Fund" and a cheque was duly sent to the 1st Eastern General Hospital at Cambridge. In all £21 had been sent there from Coates that week because there had also been a social event which was reported (list of names included) which raised about £12, the entertainers and hare auctioneer gave their services free.

- "The church tower now had a new headdress of red tiles and a fresh coat of cement; it was very striking. The churchwardens wanted to get the financial part of the contract settled as soon as possible.
- The Rector had gone to Hunstanton for a month's rest. Rev. Newman and Rev. Holmes (St. Andrew's) would continue to cover his duties. As the organist is also away Miss Gladys Thompson would substitute.
- A horse was found almost disembowelled in a field in Eldernell. Mr. W. Goody had intended taking it to Whittlesey Horse Fair.
- The Wesleyan Chapel Sunday School anniversary: the scholars were given their annual treat.

The death of William Lindsey (76) was reported who had had a cancerous growth in his throat, but had not called for medical help until a week before his death. The funeral took place in torrential rain.

- The Rector's Bible classes were starting again (8th year). News of the Guild Service at the Wesleyan Chapel. Mr J Duddington has taken on the duties of organist for the Sunday School whilst Miss Cox of Bassanhally had offered her services for all other Sunday duties.
- Jumble sale in the parish rooms.
- The Bedford brothers (Laxton and William) had both had accidents. Laxton (farmer) ran a reed into the fleshy part of his hand; the had had to be cut open to extract it. William was kicked by a horse whilst shoeing it and his ankle was dislocated. Both were recovering.

Mr John Willimott, who had emigrated to Canada, had written to say he as now farming 100 acres and doing well.
The Helping Hand Club had its annual supper. With regret Mr. W. Ashworth {my Great Grandfather} (who had been chairman for 9 years since the club's inauguration) said he had to resign because of his ill health.

Miss Margaret Evans has resigned her appointment at Coates School having got a job in Cambridge. The Rector spoke - at the end of his sermon - in feeling terms about the death of a former Rector rev. Cecil Bromley last week. The 'Dead March; was played by E G Wickes on the organ. The cricket club had a business meeting.

At 2.30 last Saturday a fire at J. Searle's stack yard at Oldermere was attended by Coates fire engine. The engine gear didn't work at first but the fire was eventually put out. £250 damage.

Owing to the urgent appeal from HQ a meeting of united political parties in Coates was held. It was unanimously agreed (resolved) that the task of canvassing for recruits be NOT undertaken. It was resolved to have meetings at Coates, The Turves and Angle Bridge.

The wedding of T. Canham of 1st Northamptonshire Regiment (who has been at home for 2 weeks with a wounded arm) to Miss Gertrude Ellen Shaw took place quietly at Holy Trinity Church.
Recruiting. It is hoped that after last week’s meeting the seeds were sown. As two married men have since gone (Fred Boon and George German) it is hoped that the example will be followed by single men who have the country's welfare at heart.
Relief Fund. Rector has put £70-£80 into the bank.

G. A. Beaton and H. and A. Johnson entertained a party of friends to a "Hare Drive" and the hares were sent to Whittlesey to be sold by auction. £9 was raised for the "Comforts for Wounded Soldiers Fund" and a cheque was duly sent to the 1st Eastern General Hospital at Cambridge. In all £21 had been sent there from Coates that week because there had also been a social event which was reported (list of names included) which raised about £12, the entertainers and hare auctioneer gave their services free.
