This man was a shoemaker/bootmaker and the son of John Edward and Lottie Ann Hart; he lived near Coates church. On the 1911 census he appears aged 12 making his date of birth 1899. On 13/11/1915 he was discharged from the army at Tring for having made a mis-statement as to age on enlistment. At his discharge his age was 16 years 10 months (which would be correct). On the medical inspection report of 10/02/1915 his apparent age was 19 years 10m, so had added a good 3 years to his correct age.
He was enlisted on 15/11/1914 and attested for the 2nd V Essex Regiment on 09/02/1915 and mobilised on 04/02/1915. His height was 6ft 1in or 5ft 10.5in depending which document you look at! His chest girth: was 38in, Range of Expansion 2.5, Complexion: Fresh, Eyes: Brown, Hair: Dark Brown.

Although he is said to have had a good character, a few offences exist in his record: Overstaying his pass from 24/05/1915 to midnight 25/05/1915 and stating a lie to company officers. He went AWOL in May 1915. Not complying with an order 20/6/1915.
During his service he embarked at Devonport 22/07/1915, went missing (in Gallipoli) 22/08/1915. He was reported wounded (not missing) 22/08/1915. The he was admitted to hospital in Malta on 27/08/1915. Later he found himself admitted to Charing Hospital, Eastleigh on 29/09/1915. Force is due to me”. Elsewhere in his record we read of ‘Invalid GSW of left foot (not hand) and Colitis 15/11/1915’.
