Bibles
On a visit to Coates in 2012 I found a display of Bibles at the back of the church. Two caught my attention as having belonged to people who would be in my family tree, if rather distantly! One (see below) was Joseph Fletcher (my grandmother was a 'Fletcher') and the other one had been presented to the church by another Fletcher; George Herbert.

During the First World War George Herbert Fletcher had received a shrapnel wound to his left leg, on 18th November 1916, which had fractured his femur. He was treated but, afterwards, his leg was an inch shorter than it had been. On 1st October 1917 the shortening was said to be 1.75 inches and he had pain at the site of the old fracture. (His army record is available on line at ancestry.co.uk.) It records his 'very good' character and that he lived at Wesley House, Coates. His occupation was 'Grocer's assistant'. He belonged to the East Surrey Regiment, 8th Battalion. From 18/1/16 to his discharge in 22/10/17 he officially did 1 year 278 days of service, although he was injured only 10 months after he was enlisted.
