Coates in WW1
Going through local newspapers has revealed a little about events, feelings and practicalities in Coates during the war years. Much of what I have discovered is mentioned on the Peterborough Advertiser pages.
On this page I intend to highlight a number of issues which have struck me. The first is that life had to go on! Thus, chimneys still needed cleaning and so we read, on 25h May 1918:- "Lady Sweep of Coates" Mrs T. Redhead the woman sweep of Coates another product of the war period. And a correspondent describes her as 'a rattling good sweep too'. |

In the Peterborough Advertiser of 14/10/1916 we learn that at the Council School, Coates, scholars had been subscribing to the Jack Cornwell Fund; 15s had been raised.
