14/07/1917 Corporal G. Ward Cambs had just been home at Coates on short leave. He had succeeded in obtaining his gymnastics instructor's badge and gave a sample of his powers with a local squad for a few minutes in bayonet practice. Some of them will not forget it in a hurry.

The church burial records show his burial as July 24th, 1916 and there is a pencil note in the margin saying that a military funeral was held in April 1930.

Height 5ft 4.75, weight 121lb chest 35.5 expansion 3in. Fair complexion, Grey eyes and brown hair, his religion was C of E. His father was W. Watford of the King's Head, Gracious Street Whittlesey. He was born about 1889 so could have been the same fellow. It would explain why he rose to be Sergeant so quickly.

30/08/1917 Injury to shoulder was not though to interfere with his efficiency as a soldier.
22/09/1917 Gunner A. Weldon, who is lying in the 83rd General Dublin Hospital, France, writes to say he is gradually getting the use of this arm back again under the electric treatment.
22/12/1917 Stoker A. Searle and Gunner A. Weldon were home on leave. The former looked a picture of health, but the latter, though well in health, had almost lost the use of his left arm through being thrown off the limber of his gun out in France.

09/06/1917 Private T. Wheatley Notts & Derby Regiment met his cousin QMS J Wheatley (Cambs) of Whittlesey and 2 others of his cousins to their mutual pleasure.
18/08/1917 DIED IN A BRAVE MANNER: Lance-Corporal Tom Wheatley, Sherwood Foresters, of Coates, was killed in the battle in Flanders on August 4th. Tom, as he was universally called, was well known and very popular in the district, and he will be greatly missed by his many friends. The news was conveyed to Mrs. Wheatley in the following letter: 8/8/17 “Dear Mrs. Wheatley, I am sorry to have to tell you the sad news of your son Tom's death. He was killed on the 4th of August and suffered no pain at all. He was a jolly fine fellow, and all his section was fond of him. I need say no more, as I myself met Tom the day he joined up at Wisbech and we made pals and hare been pals to the end." This letter was sent by Corporal A. Thompson, of the Sherwood Foresters, the regiment to which Tom belonged. A further letter, from his officer, stated "He was a good chap and of great use to me in my platoon, and we shall all him very much. He met his death in a brave manner, carrying down an import¬ant message from a strong point to our Company Headquarters there was a lot of shelling at the time. Please accept from the officers and men of his Company our sincerest sympathy. We trust your sorrow may be helped by the though that your son died very bravely fighting for his King and country.” On Sunday a memorial service was to be held in the Church, and as usual, this last public tribute to the memory of the dead hero would be paid by the volunteers and old schoolmates, who were to assemble on the Green at 6.16 p.m. to attend the same.

17/02/1917 Private R. Wing met some Coates boys in Cambs Regiment. All were well.
22/09/1917 Private R. Wing, Cambs. Regiment, B.E.F., wrote from France, and said they were now several miles behind the line, resting after the terrible shaking up they got on the 31st of July, when they went over the top: He expressed the deepest regret about the death of Lance-Corporal T. Wheatley, with whom he and Private A. Setchfield spent the evening before the sad event, talking about their doings out there and about old times. He said all the following boys were well: A. Setchfield, H. Boon, W. Kisby, and H. Constable, and wish to be remembered to all friends.

They seem 50 years behind us, very poor."

06/05/1916 Private J. Woodcock RAMC tells a funny boating story; he and other borrowed a boat on the river but were chased by the owners who were waving the boards which were missing from the bottom!
30/09/1916 Private J. Woodcock RAMC has rejoined his section after a short illness.
24/03/1917 Private J. Woodcock (RAMC) writes to his parents that he is hopeful and picking up French. He is often called upon to be interpreter for fellow soldiers. He sends information that Gunner "Jack" Hart is out in Salonica.
28/07/1917 Private J. Woodstock RAMC who has seen 18 months continuous service in various parts of battle front has been home on leave. He speaks fluent French.

24/03/1917 Private J. Woodcock (RAMC) writes to his parents that he is hopeful and picking up French. He is often called upon to be interpreter for fellow soldiers. He sends information that Gunner "Jack" Hart is out in Salonica.

26/08/1916 Private J. Woods (Suffolks) was lying in King George's Hospital Stamford Street London. His leg had been set for 3 weeks and was progressing favourably. Most of the local mates who were with him on the fatal July 1st had been laid to rest out at the front.

22/07/1916 Private A. Wotton (Suffolk Regiment) had just had a weekend at home at Coates from Tring where he had been isolated for measles.
02/09/1916 Private A. Wotton had been home for 6 days leave.
11/11/1916 Private A. Wotton (Suffolks) wrote to say he has had narrow escapes; in one engagement his rifle actually splintered in his hand but he was not injured.
19/05/1917 Private A. Wotton of the Suffolks was killed on May 3rd, the news was received last Monday.
26/05/1917 MEMORIAL SERVICE AT COATES. On Monday evening a memorial service for the late Private A. Wotton was held at Coates Church, the Rector officiating. There was a very large attendance the regular congregation being augmented by members of the Volunteers, under Second-Lieutenant J. P. McCarthy, with the Bugle Band under Co.-Sergt -Major Raween (?). A most impressive service was held, at the conclusion of which the Volunteers paraded the village and were dismissed at the Public Hall. The local members of the Volunteers wish to thank the officer, N.C.O., and other members of the Company for their kindness in coming over and joining them in this tribute to the memory of a faithful son of the Empire.
