Annual Distribution of Prizes at Wesleyan Chapel. Men's Club social.

Red Cross sent a receipt for the £5 10s given by the Men's Club and Institute. The Helping Hands Club members subscribed £2 10s to send to Coates soldiers out in France or the Mediterranean also to those who are home, wounded. It was found that soldiers did not want bulky parcels. The article speaks of '32 Coates soldiers'; the donors are named.

Death of octogenarian (86) William Dolby who leaves 3 sons. H. Wright was the undertaker.

The death of Mrs J. German of the Post Office is reported, which was on Saturday last. Her death was sudden. She was being treated for bronchitis and, last summer, had had an operation in London on her eyes. Whilst there she had been in a Zeppelin raid which affected her nerves; she never really recovered. Funeral on Thursday.

There is to be a benefit concert at the Public Hall for Mrs W. Beeton. Death of another octogenarian (83) Mrs B. Gales, widow of W. H. Gale. Pig Club donation to Red Cross Society came about because members decided not to have the annual supper, but to give the equivalent amount to the Red Cross. Many names are listed in the report. Total was £4 15s.

In the Whittlesey Petty Sessions section David Gilbey (publican) was fined 10s for not causing the intensity of the inside lighting of his house to be effectively shaded or obscured so that no bright light was shed outside.

Empire Day - the school children were going to mark Wednesday May 24th with a procession, headed by a trolley bearing the figures of Britannia and John Bull to the Green. They would also make a collection for the YMCA.
Memorial Service - On Sunday evening the church at Coates was crowded for the service in memory of the late Pte. A. Neal, of the 1st Northants. Regt., who was killed whilst out on voluntary night duty with his officer. A procession of old schoolmates of the above, under Mr. A. J. Chaplin, was formed at the Cross Roads, and headed by two local soldiers home on leave (Ptes. T. Blunt ASC, and H. Thorn, Cambs. Regt.) marched to church. They were met about halfway by the Rector and the Boy Scouts who took the lead to the sacred building and occupied the choir stalls. The service was conducted by the Rector, who also preached, basing his sermon unon the text, "Because I go to the Father" (John). The "Dead March" in "Saul" was played by organist (Miss G. Thompson), just before the Benediction, and the National Anthem was sung by all immediately afterwards.

An accident has befallen George Wheatley youngest son of J. Wheatley who was drilling a nut in the blacksmith's shop when it slipped and his hand was caught under the drill. His middle finger and part of the 3rd finger were amputated (Left hand I think)

On Saturday some workmen were engaged in the gravel pit on the farm of G. A. Beeton of Eldernell when they came upon a human skeleton about 2½ feet below the surface. Unfortunately, one of the workmen struck his pickaxe into the skull and broke it thus spoiling what would otherwise have been a perfect relic of bygone days. The teeth in the upper jaw were in perfect condition. The discovery was made on the site of an ancient cemetery probably dating back to Roman times as there is part of a Roman road still in existence close by. It is not an uncommon occurrence to come upon human bones when excavating for gravel at Eldernell but no such perfect specimen of human remains has been hitherto come across.

[1] Harvest Fatal Accident: Miss Mabel Randall (eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs Bert Randall of Council Row Coates) was on Thursday run over by a heavy cart in the harvest field causing such serious injury that death occurred soon afterwards.
[2] We regret to chronicle this week the sad loss which has befallen the Rector and Mrs Milnes in the death of their only daughter Miss Violet Mary Milne at the early age of 14. The deceased suddenly developed signs of internal trouble about a fortnight ago. (This is a LONG report which takes a good chunk of the next column in the paper).

On Saturday some workmen were engaged in the gravel pit on the farm of G. A. Beeton of Eldernell when they came upon a human skeleton about 2½ feet below the surface. Unfortunately, one of the workmen struck his pickaxe into the skull and broke it thus spoiling what would otherwise have been a perfect relic of bygone days. The teeth in the upper jaw were in perfect condition. The discovery was made on the site of an ancient cemetery probably dating back to Roman times as there is part of a Roman road still in existence close by. It is not an uncommon occurrence to come upon human bones when excavating for gravel at Eldernell but no such perfect specimen of human remains has been hitherto come across.

Day (Royal Irish Rifles – wounded), Private J. Turner (Suffolks), Private A. Rowell (Northants Rgt). There are still two unaccounted for and whose absence is causing their friends much anxiety. Private S. Dolby (Royal Fusiliers) and Gunner A. Stroud (RFA)

[1] The whole eleven Prisoners from this parish have now returned home. Pte S. J. Dolby arrived of Saturday and Gunner A. Stroud on Monday. The whole list is Lance-Corporal J. W. Burgandy, Privates G W. Bedford, G. Ward, F. Day, H. Day, A. Rowell, J Bates, J.W. Turner, H. Wheeler and the two above.

[3] Accident to H. H. Beharrell, coal merchant of Eastrea. His horse took fright and started kicking, Mr Beharrell fell off the cart and was injured by the horse etc. that ultimately his right foot had to be amputated.

[1] Harvest Fatal Accident: Miss Mabel Randall (eldest daughter of Mr & Mrs Bert Randall of Council Row Coates) was on Thursday run over by a heavy cart in the harvest field causing such serious injury that death occurred soon afterwards.
[2] We regret to chronicle this week the sad loss which has befallen the Rector and Mrs Milnes in the death of their only daughter Miss Violet Mary Milne at the early age of 14. The deceased suddenly developed signs of internal trouble about a fortnight ago. (This is a LONG report which takes a good chunk of the next column in the paper).
