The work on the Coates and District War memorial has commenced on the Green and the foundations is now complete. It is a substantial base consisting of 27.5 tons of gravel, brick bats and concrete having been laid down. As soon as this is set the work of erecting the actual memorial will begin and, given favourable transport of the same from Aberdeen, the contractors expect it to be unveiled by Easter. Flag Day in aid of Dr. Barnardo's Homes £4 4s 5d was raised (There is a list of children and amounts collected in pairs)

A shocking fatality - Mr Ellis Thompson eldest son of Mr & Mrs J w Thompson was riding his cycle down March Road when he collided with a pedestrian (who was unhurt). The cyclist had brain concussion and died.

The committee have reluctantly abandoned the idea of holding the unveiling ceremony during Easter as dispatch of the parts from quarries in Aberdeen was too late for work to be done. It has arrived at Whittlesey station and work starts on Tuesday next; the unveiling will be in April on a date to be announced. Wedding - a large congregation attended the wedding of Arthur Smith and Mary Rust.

Owing to inclement weather of the last few days the unveiling ceremony has had to be altered from Thursday 22nd to Thursday 29th as much of the work is delayed. The committee fixed the time at 6pm. An entertainment in the Public Hall raised £11 for the Burial Ground Committee to clear off the debt.

Coates' Sad Battlefield Echo. On Saturday afternoon the village gathered to honour the memory of Mr. Tom Clarke the dearly-loved son of Mr. & Mrs. R. H. Clarke who, after much suffering bravely born, laid down his life in the service of his country as surely as those who fell on the battlefield. Mr Clarke served for some time during the war with a Machine Gun Corps, unfortunately contracting the seeds of fatal disease while on active service from which he was honourably discharged in November 1918. (More information given which I will put in the soldiers section) He was born 25 June 1899 and died on 14 June 1921
