The axial deviation of Coates church
On Google Maps the images are orientated with North at the top of your screen. These small images, taken from Google maps show that not all religious buildings point due East.
Peterborough Cathedral (centre) is pretty much on a West-East line (it is perhaps 4 degrees out by my rough calculations) but the altar end of Coates church is shifted towards North by about 16 degrees.
Lichfield is known to be some 30 degrees of the West/East line which can clearly be seen above. The situation is actually more interesting than that, I discovered when I emailed the Cathedral and a Cathedral Guide was kind enough to reply in detail.
