Funerals
Several funeral reports give the names of the organist and this is done, more often than not, in the manner found in the Peterborough Advertiser of August 3rd 1907
“At the funeral of Mr. Francis George Ruff (farmer): The service was conducted by the Rev. T. Duckett, rector of Coates, and Mrs. Duckett played the Dead March (in Saul) upon the organ as the mournful procession left the church for the graveside.”
The Dead March in “Saul” was played with almost monotonous regularity – I suppose in the same way that brides would have Mendelssohn’s “Wedding March” during my own organ playing career.
Census
Mrs Duckett died in 1910 and the organist in 1911, according to the census on Sunday 2nd April, was Ernest George Wickes who was living with the rector. {*Clearly he is male but his age was entered into the female column!}

Ernest George Wickes was born in 1886 and was baptized on 07 Feb 1886.
On the 1891 census he is aged 5 and a scholar living in Hunter Street [RG12 Piece number 1199 Folio 54 Page 15.]
His father, John Wickes Male 29 born 1862, was a Shoe Operator.
On the 1901 census Ernest G. Wickes’ entry is:
Son Single Male 15 1886 Commercial Clerk Northamptonshire, England
He died in 1961 aged 75 in Northamptonshire.
I have not managed to find anything more about him.
In the Peterborough Advertiser of March 22nd 1913 we read that The Rector spoke - at the end of his sermon - in feeling terms about the death of a former Rector Rev. Cecil Bromley last week. The 'Dead March’ was played by E. G. Wickes on the organ.
The Peterborough Advertiser May 16th 1914 contains a long report on the Funeral of Harry Fountain 16/8/1890 - 6/5/1914 which has organist details and many names. (I will try to obtain it)
The Memorial Service in memory of the late Pte. A. Neal, of the 1st Northants. Regt. Reported in the Peterborough Advertiser of 20th May 1916 states that The “Dead March” in “Saul” was played by organist (Miss G. Thompson), just before the Benediction, and the National Anthem was sung by all immediately afterwards.
George W. Dolby was organist from 1937 to 1987 and there is a plaque to his memory in the church.
On the 1891 census he is aged 5 and a scholar living in Hunter Street [RG12 Piece number 1199 Folio 54 Page 15.]
