William and Eliza Ashworth
One of the points of my survey of the churchyard was to locate the resting places of those of my relatives whose graves are not marked. This page is about William and Eliza Ashworth, my Great Grandparents.
I was able to see the church plot map which I scanned and transcribed. A small portion is shown below on which the green cells are where grave markers exist and the white ones where markers are missing. The yellow cell is the plot occupied by William and Eliza. I have rotated the image ro make it more readable but the sideways version will make sense when compared to the plot map.

William Ashworth - 1859-1913
He was born on 19 June 1859 in Coates, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. The birth was registered on 13th June 1859 by his mother Sarah who could not write, so she made her mark.
He appeared in the census on 7 April 1861 in Coates, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire and was listed in the 1871 census as an Agricultural Labourer. He appears in Kelly's Directory for 1879 as a Wheelwright and Carpenter in Coates, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. However, on 3 October 1886 he was described as a Farm Labourer in Coates, on the Birth Certificate of his son George. By 1 June 1905 William was again a Carpenter and Wheelwright and he had an Apprentice (John Cole), which is shown on the census taken on 2 April 1911; he was still living in Coates, Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire.
William signed a will on 18 April 1913. He would seem to have known he was very ill.

Death and Funeral of Mr. W. Ashworth
We regret to announce the death of Mr. Wm. Ashworth, who passed peacefully away at his own home early on Wednesday morning last. Deceased had been suffering for some years from a tubercular disease, which, during the last few months, made rapid progress, and it was seen some little time ago that the end was not far off, though it came with a greater suddenness than was anticipated. The deceased had been in business as a carpenter and joiner in the village for about fourteen years, and was highly respected by everyone with whom he came in contact. He held the Chairmanship of the Helping Hand Club, until illness compelled him to resign the same last year, much to the sorrow of the members. The funeral took place on Saturday when the deceased was laid to rest in the churchyard at Coates, amidst general signs of regret and sympathy. The Rev. J.T. [...] of Whittlesey, performed the last [and] rites, taking the service in the chapel (of which deceased had been so active a member) and also at the graveside. The coffin which was of elm, with black fittings, bearing the inscription: “William Ashworth; born June 19th 1859; died April 30th 1913” was carried shoulder high by four of his friends - fellow members of the chapel - Messrs. J. Woodcock, J. Tarry, J. W. Bedford, and J. Barnes. The chief mourners were: Mrs. Ashworth, (widow), Mr. and Mrs. J. Furness (son-in-law and daughter), Mr. and Mrs. J. Ashworth (son and daughter-in-law), Mr. and Mrs. G. Ashworth (son and daughter-in-law), Miss D. Ashworth (daughter), Dorothy Ashworth (granddaughter), Mr. and Mrs. Tyers, Mr. and Mrs. Garner, Mr. and Mrs. W. Carter, and Mrs. T. Ashworth. Others present included Mr. Joel Blunt. Mr. and Mrs. James Blunt, Mr. James Searle, Mr. J. Barrett, Mrs. T. Rust, Mrs. J. Ruff, and many others. The floral tributes were very beautiful.
