Postcards
I happened upon the postcard below on Ebay and sent for it. From the half penny stamp I think the card was posted between 1902 and 1904. [See opposite]
To the right of the old postcard is a view I took in September 2012. I could not get the exact view as the tree would have obscured the whole church. Also there are some headstones on the postcard which have gone now and a few which have been damaged. The 'candlestick' looking monument is not the same one on the modern photo - that is 2 stones to the right and has fallen down (all the bits still exist). Note that some railings were taken away, I assume in the war to be melted down for the war effort. |
The chimney has also gone as there is not a stainless steel one at the front of the church.
I also wonder if the postcard shot was taken from a step ladder! |
Here is a view of The Green from a postcard I bought from Ebay. Somehow it had found its way to Canada, but was originally posted to Surrey. It has the same stamp as the next card down so I guess it was posted in the 1900s.
I bought this next postcard on 26th October 2013 at a Family History Fair in Cambridge. It shows the Wesleyan Chapel (now closed) and I think it was produced at much the same time as the one above. I will go and take a 'now' photo when I am next in Coates.
The postcard on the right is from the Cambridgeshire Heritage Collectors Cards series. [Click to enlarge]
It is No. 21 COATES The Memorial, The Green and Holy Trinity Church. The date of the card must be pre- 1995 since that was the year when all UK geographical area codes were converted to begin with 01; a number of the reverse has the code 0933 (Wellingborough) My own shots of the War Memorial are HERE. |
