I have been put in touch with a contact in Coates who will be pleased to help me find out more about the village.

I have been absolutely fascinated (and somewhat carried way) by looking into a past Curate of Holy Trinity John S Nuzum. My researches took me to the wiki page about St. Bartholemew the Great on which I not only found the name of the rector who officiated at John's second wedding but also the names of the previous organists at St. Bart's. One of these was Paul Steinitz who wrote a music 'theory' book I used at school, many years ago. Brian Brockless is also a name I recognise from my day job as a musician. It's a small world.
I came across Google Books today and was able to find a few things out about the church which are on the church page.
I have been looking at household sizes today. I was able to produce two charts on the 1861 census page using Excel and the COUNTIF function. I have not yet been able to count automatically (I could do it manually) the number of sons and daughters in each household. There has to be a way!
Later on this same evening I found the answer was to use the SUM Function but as an array formula. It took me a while to sort it out. The webpage which helped me was here. I have spoken to someone in the Cambridge records office who tells me that since Coates did not become a separate parish until 1850 then any records are going to be in with Whittlesey before that. She suggested - when I go - I should look in the Bedford Level Corporation records as drainage records may be found.
I am not sure if I need this blog given that I have a Site Log page, but this could replace that page, eventually, as it automatically dates the entries. Time will tell.
